The Steins Collect: Matisse, Picasso, and the Parisian Avant-Garde

Today we went to see this exhibit at the Grand Palais.  It just opened on October 5, after being on display at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art through September 6.

Gertrude Stein and her brothers, Leo and Michael, and Michael's wife, Sarah, collected the early works of "avant-garde" artists and the show includes over 200 works by artists such as Matisse, Picasso, Degas, Cezanne, Renoir and Manet. Along with the great artwork, the exhibit included diary entries, postcards, and photographs offering a glimpse into the Stein's personal life and their relationships with the artists.

We've been reading quite a bit about Gertrude Stein and Tuesday we went to find her home.

We started at the Jardin du Luxembourg.

A nice Polish group took our photo in front of the small replica of the Statue of Liberty.  The guy who had my camera wasn't much of a photographer and cut off Lady Liberty's head.

And then on to find the Stein's famous home, where they held "salons" every Saturday night for the up and coming artists and writers that invaded Paris in the early 1900's.

There is even a plaque that identifies the building as being the home of the fascinating Ms. Stein.

And then we got lost................
